Separate video or S-Video cables are also called as Y/C cables. S-Video cables are capable of transmitting analog video signals at great distances. Technically speaking, there are two different streams that carry video signal. But the whole phenomenon is different from composite signal which carries picture signals in both low-quality and high-quality formats.
S-Video cables carry video signals at moderate 480i to 576i resolutions. Only difference between S-Video and composite signals is that S-Video does not carry audio signal on the same cable. A typical female S-Video mini-DIN connector has four pins. Other S-Video cables feature 7-pin locking connectors also called as dubs. S-Video cables are compatible with RCA connectors’ format which makes them very useful with old-age TVs. Composite video input and Y/C signal input are compatible with each other.
S-Video cables perform better when molded with silver plating. Unlike other connectors, gold plating over nickel connector body is useless for getting good reception. S-Video cable products when used in TV network can handle NTSC, PAL and SECAM encoded signals.
When used for high definition videos, both 4:3 and 16:9 formats are compatible with S-Video formats. Widescreen signaling through S-Video cable is also possible in PAL format.
JVC’s S-VHS video cassette system also implements S-Video technology to its full potential. But, due to poor response from consumer sector, the gadget failed to dominate. But, after a few years, S-Video format was back with DVD players, video game console accessories and satellite receivers. S-Video format was also adapted to graphics card technology to some extent. But, advanced HDMI technology replaced S-Video later. S-Video cable is still considered as a better and cheaper alternative to composite video input with good quality and detail level. Component video, later introduced reduced the need for S-Video cable products with great quality and cheaper cables.
